I have had clients in their sixties who have been struggling with their weight for over 50 years.
And most of my clients have at least 30 years track record of “diets” that failed.
When you think about it, that’s a lot of failure and a lot of disappointment. And it would be natural after so many disappointments for them to start to believe that there was something wrong with them. That they couldn’t achieve lasting weight loss.
But that is the wrong conclusion to draw.
Most of these women have spent the last 30-50 years trying varying types of diets. Diets are short-term solutions to a long term problem. They are destined to fail. When a car breaks down, we don’t blame the driver, we blame the car. Similarly, when a diet fails, it’s the diet’s fault not the dieter.
When I first see these women, they are naturally sceptical of whether there is any way that they can actually lose weight. But the advantage of a behavioural approach to weight loss is:
1. It’s not a diet. You don’t need to stick to a specific plan of what to eat and not eat
2. It’s not unpleasant or painful
3. The principles behind the programme make sense. Anyone who looks into it realises that it really is the only way to lose weight and keep it off.
Often I will get prospective clients to speak to other clients who have been through or are going through the process. This really gives them hope that it is possible. But even then, committing to a programme like this is a leap of faith.
Luckily for the women that do take the leap of faith and start the programme, they are soon astounded by what can be achieved.
50 years of struggling is a long time. But as investment advisers often remind us “past performance is not an indicator of future performance”.
You may have struggled to lose weight in the past on a “diet”, but with the right method, you can be successful.
