This study found that consuming egg yolks was almost as bad as smoking for your heart. And this advice has been featured in many newspapers under the headline “Eggs almost as bad as smoking”.
If you will recall, we have had a to and fro over many years as to whether eggs are good or bad for you.
Depending on which day you pick up a newspaper, it’s hard to know what to believe. Eggs, milk and other previously well thought of staples of a normal diet veer between being healthy and good for you to being a noxious health hazard.
So what should you believe?
The fact is you should really take newspaper reports of health breakthroughs with a pinch of salt. They come thick and fast and are driven by two factors:
1. Researchers need publicity to get more research funding
2. Health reporters need things to write about
And obviously the more sensationalist you are, the more likely you will get a reporter to write about what you have researched and get people to read about it.
This doesn’t make for very accurate dissemination of health information.
So in the case of eggs, are they really almost as bad as smoking?
The study asked people to recollect how many eggs they ate per week over the time that they have been eating eggs. If I asked you to remember what you had for lunch yesterday, you might struggle, so asking people to recall how many egg yolks they have eaten over the last 20 years is ridiculous.
The resulting information would be so unreliable that you really can’t draw any conclusions from it at all.
So what should you do? Eat lots of eggs or avoid them altogether?
As with everything else, moderation is the best. If you like eggs, have them every now and then. And if you hate them don’t have them at all.
