FAQ – How Do I Blast Through a Weight Loss Plateau?

Q:
I have been trying to lose weight and had some good initial results. I lost about 1/2 stone (7 pounds, 3 kg) over several weeks. But now, I’ve stalled. I haven’t lost any weight for a few weeks. What am I doing wrong?

Dr. K:
You’re not doing anything wrong. It’s a weight loss plateau. This is a natural part of losing weight.

Q:
But my weight loss has just stopped. It’s so frustrating.

Dr. K:
Unfortunately, weight loss doesn’t follow a strict pattern. If someone is going to lose 10 pounds in 10 weeks, they don’t lose exactly 1 pound per week. It goes in fits and starts.

Q:
So how do I blast through a weight loss plateau?

Dr. K:
You don’t need to blast through the plateau. Let me ask you something. You have made lots of changes to your eating patterns. Do you feel like you are eating less than you were previously?

Q:
Absolutely. Much less.

Dr. K:
Then you don’t need to worry about blasting. You just need to stay patient and within a week or two, you will see further results.

Q:
Are you sure there is nothing else I can do to blast through the plateau? What about if I starve myself for a couple of days? Will that hurry the process along?

Dr. K:
No! If anything starving yourself will make things worse. First of all, you want to develop long term habits around managing your weight. Starving yourself is not a long term habit. Secondly, when you starve yourself, the body interprets that as a sign that food is scarce, so it actually prevents weight loss by slowing down your metabolism. Your overexuberance will sabotage the outcome you desire.

You just need to be patient and the results will come.

    So far it’s been quite managable. I like the phrase ‘I can have this if I want to, but do I
    really need it right know?’ as it brings about a ‘self awareness’ for me and allows me to forgo certain unnecessary foods which otherwise I may have consumed without a second thought! ‘Tis a good feeling!!
