FAQ: I Want to Lose 1 stone in 3 Weeks. Can You Help Me?

For the next few weeks, I am going to answer some questions that I frequently get asked regarding weight loss.

I want to lose 1 stone (14 pounds / 6.3kg) in 3 weeks. Can you help me?


A:
No

Why Not?


A:
Because if you want to lose 1 stone in 3 weeks, you are going to be more concerned with starving yourself down to a desired weight than making the changes needed to lose weight in the long term. If you can tolerate taking a few weeks more to ensure that the changes you make are going to last, then I would be more than happy to help you.


Q:
How fast are we talking?


A:
1 stone in 8-10 weeks.


Q:
Can’t I just get down to the goal I want really quickly and then do your programme?


A:
It doesn’t work that way. Imagine a politician lying and cheating their way into power and then deciding to be honest once they get there. Do you believe that’s possible, or even likely? How you get there is very important. If you starve yourself down to a weight you want, you will find it hard to suddenly switch to the right habits to maintain the weight loss.

My principle that I work on is that I want people to start losing weight using methods that they will continue to apply for the rest of their life.

And remember, most people are in a hurry, partly because they are impatient but also because they think that dieting is so unpleasant that they will only be able to tolerate it for a short time.

A behavioural approach is a much easier way to go about losing weight. A new client of mine last week, told me that she was surprised that she really was able to eat the foods that she would normally eat and still lose weight. This sounds like a ridiculous claim, but once you understand the principle behind it, it’s actually just common sense.

What is the principle behind it?


A:
That there is a significant amount of what you eat, that neither provides you with nutrition nor enjoyment. Your eating patterns can be re-trained, so that you require less food to get the same amount of satisfaction from food. In other words, you get the same enjoyment from fewer calories, hence you can lose weight.
