How many times have you heard this?
“I LOST WEIGHT USING THIS METHOD AND YOU CAN TOO”
It seems to make sense.
If someone else was overweight and succeeded, not only will they understand what you’re going through, but their method is likely to work for you.
But it doesn’t work that way, does it?
Someone might understand exactly what you’re feeling, and have been through it before, but that does not mean that the solution they found will be applicable to you.
Different things work for different people.
Often when clients have lost weight using my approach, they tell me things like:
“I’ve worked it all out. What it really all comes down to is …”
So what does it come down to? Well that’s the interesting thing. No client ever says the same thing. Each one says that the answer is something different.
How can that be? They’ve all lost weight using the same behavioural approach. So how can it be so different?
Because the behavioural approach is by its nature, flexible and adaptive. It has to be.
The underlying principle of a behavioural approach is that there’s no such thing as one size fits all. Each person’s approach must be tailored to them.
So a different aspect of the approach resonates with each client.
So while something might have made the big difference to a particular client, it probably won’t work for others in exactly the same way.
What’s the upshot of all of this?
1. Don’t feel bad if what worked for your friend or neighbour doesn’t work for you.
When it comes to losing weight, you don’t need someone else’s answers. You need answers that work for you.
2. Any approach that relies on one just one strategy (e.g. drink this juice, take this supplement, only eat these food groups, fast on these particular days) might work with a few people but will ordinarily fail with most, in the long-term.
3. Flexibility is crucial. You have to be able to tailor any approach to your own life or else it will be doomed to fail. It’s too hard to stick to someone else’s rules forever.
