Many of the women I see in my clinic are very successful people. They have excelled at different professions, become prominent members of the community and successfully maintained a healthy family life.
If anything this makes it all the more frustrating for them that they can’t get their weight under control. Many describe a deep-seated frustration that while they have the skills and the ability to master every other part of their life, this one remains stubbornly resistant.
I’ve heard many variations of the following statement:
“I am usually able to apply my determination and persistence to conquer any goal, but why can’t I do the same with my weight?”
This can lead to feelings of failure and lowered confidence accompanied by a suspicion that there is something wrong with them.
But all of these people who I speak to, who have been unable to succeed losing weight, have relied on “diets” and “diet-like” methods.
If I asked you to hammer a nail in place, but instead of giving you a hammer, I gave you a piece of cheese, you probably wouldn’t get very far. But it would be a terrible conclusion to make that there was something wrong with you because you couldn’t do it. Without the right tool, you can’t get the right result.
Diets are short term, depriving and unpleasant. They are not long term solutions to weight loss. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, then you need to change your habits and lifestyle.
