I saw a client yesterday who returned from a trip abroad having lost weight. This wasn’t because she had taken ill or anything! She was in the South of France and had a lovely time and yet still managed to lose weight.
How did she do it?
Well, before she left, we worked out the best strategy for going on a fun holiday with her family. We wanted her to maximise her enjoyment and minimise her calories.
This involved anticipating and planning for situations that may have come up. Of course, you can’t plan for everything that will come up, but the act of planning is useful. And in this case, it was obviously helpful, because my client had a great time and is still well on track with her weight loss.
But what happens if you get back from holiday and have gained a few pounds?
First of all, before you go away next time, come and see me!
And if you can’t see me, then at least take some time out to think about how you can approach your holiday better. The thing is, if you want to be slim and healthy for life, you are going to have to learn how to cope with all the situations that come up in your life and that includes holidays. If you don’t learn how to cope with them, then you will forever struggle to maintain your weight loss.
Second of all, don’t sweat it. I know it’s not great to gain weight because it means you have to “re-lose” the weight all over again. But once the damage is done, you don’t want to make things worse by throwing in the towel.
Some people feel so disappointed by gaining weight on a holiday that they give up or temporarily go off the rails because they think “oh well what’s the point?”. Often their reaction to the setback is worse than the setback itself.
The best response to a weight loss “reversal” on holiday is:
1. Relax. Don’t let a reversal put you off track
2. Work out what went wrong so that you don’t repeat the mistakes next time
3. Get back “into the zone” right now. The true hallmark of a successful weight maintainer is their ability to overcome setbacks and get right back into their routine as quickly as possible
4. Congratulate yourself for doing the above three things.
Remember, the only way you can fail at losing weight with this behavioural approach is if you give up.
